MIME DEPARTMENT HAMU in PRAGUE
The Department of pantomime was founded in 1992 and it's the youngest artistic education programme at the Music and Dance Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts ( AMU ). Originally Pantomime was a subject at the Department of Dance, becoming an independent study programme from the 1980's - called Choregraphy of Pantomime and its founder and head of department was the outstanding Czech Mime Ladislav Fialka.

After Prof. Fialka the evolution of Pantomime as a discipline was forwarded by Prof. Ctibor Turba, who conceived a wider concept of Nonverbal Theatre and Comedy. He founded theDepartment of Nonverbal Theatre and Comedy and was at its head until 1999. When he left the leadership was taken over by Prof. Boris Hybner, who was head of the Department until 2010. Under his leadershoip the education of the Department focussed on the basic disciplines of Mime - Pantomime, Clown and Slap-Stick - and the name of the Department was changed into Department of Pantomime (2009).

In 2010 Adam Halaš becomes the new leader of the Department and brings a new concept of education of Mime. Parallely to the basic disciplines the Department of Pantomime focusses on further contemporary genres of Mime, such as Physical Theatre and New Circus. Through this connection of classical and younger disciplines the study programme links to the strong tradition of Czech Pantomime and offers a modern approach to Mime -Theatre, which is reacting to the present. The study programme focusses especially on Devised Theatre of the students. The Department offers an educative programme with a wide range of professional admittance in the professional show-business, as well as in other professions connected with the arts ( e.g. pedagogy, tertiary education, cultural management etc. - see also PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION /  PROFILE OF GRADUATE ) .

The Department of Pantomime is a professional school of Mime with international significance. A University providing an international platform for cooperation for Czech and foreign artists forwarding the progress of the Art of Mime as well as representing the Czech Republic in the growing international network of professional artistic schools.
